Soldiers fight to protect our country and to keep us safe. However, a recent study found that the driving skills needed to survive in Iraq and Afghanistan translate into dangerous driving if used on our public roads. This could mean lead to serious car wrecks which could lead to serious personal injury or even wrongful death claims. Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan must be aggressive and driver at high speeds, travel in the center of the road, and drive erratically in tunnels. This is their best strategy to avoid road side bombs and sniper fire. However, when they return to the U.S., the soldiers apparently have a difficult time returning to their normal safe driving habits.
A study was done by the University of Minnesota in 2007. This study found that the dangerous driving habits formed in the war setting sime to continue even when they return to the U.S. The study further concluded that this driving placed the soldiers, the members of their family, and their communities in danger.
Some of the interesting statistics from this study:
(1) Twenty-Five percent of the soldiers returning from war admitted that they often drove down the center of the road and even drove through stop signs.
(2) Ten percent of the soldiers returning from war admitted that they often drove under bridges or through tunnels erratically.
The good news is that after the soldiers were at home driving on public roads for 90 days, then these dangerous aggressive driving techniques began to fade away. I find it very ironic that the brave warriors who put their lives on the line to protect us sometimes put everyone at risk when attempting to integrate back into civilian society. Soldiers who fight for our country are certainly heros, but even heros can make mistakes that can cause serious injuries or death to others.
